Like many young scholars eyeing a future in academia, John Irwin had sketched a career to-do list when he earned a PhD. His top priority would be writing a book making the case that Hart Crane is the most underrated American poet of the 20th century. But he never imagined back then that he might still be toiling away on that draft 37 years later.
