Andrew Motion Wins 2014 Ted Hughes Award

The Writing Seminars is delighted to share the news that Andrew Motion, soon to join the Department as a Homewood Professor of the Arts, has received the 2014 Ted Hughes Award for his radio performance Coming Home, first broadcast on BBC Radio 4.

Based upon Motion’s recorded conversations with the last British soldiers to leave Afghanistan, Coming Home combines original poetry and the soldiers’ own testimony to create a work that Hughes Award judge Julia Copus calls “accessible, innovative and deeply moving.” Other judges for this year’s Hughes Award were Grayson Perry and Kei Miller.

The Ted Hughes Award for New Works in Poetry was established in 2009 by U.K. Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy “to recognize excellence in poetry, highlighting outstanding contributions made by poets to our cultural life.” The award includes a prize of £5,000.
