Dora Malech Selected for Engaged Faculty and Community Fellows Program

Writing Seminars faculty member Dora Malech has been awarded an Engaged Faculty Fellowship by Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Social Concern. The Fellowship, which includes support for a graduate assistant, a $2,000 stipend, and formal training in the principles and practice of community-based learning, will allow Malech to design and implement a 2015-2016 Writing Seminars course titled “Readings in Poetry: Of Late―Poetry & Social Justice,” in partnership with Writers in Baltimore Schools.

“The course,” writes Malech, “will examine strategies of social and political commentary in the poetries of America, the UK, and beyond, including Latin America, Spain, Russia, Africa, and Eastern Europe. The community component of the course will bring Hopkins students into conversation with the larger community of Baltimore and put students’ own writing and reading into context and practice.”
