Kristopher Jansma (BA Writing Seminars 2003) has been chosen as the 2014 winner of the Sherwood Anderson Foundation Fiction Award, in recognition of his debut novel, The Unchangeable Spots of Leopards, published by Viking/Penguin in 2013. Competition judges described Jansma’s narrative voice as “fresh yet generous, with whiffs of Salinger and Kerouac,” and added, “Readers are taught, delighted, and moved emotionally to action by reading this enjoyable new novel.” Previous winners of the Sherwood Anderson Foundation Fiction Award include Randall Kenan, Katherine Min, and Nelly Rosario. Jansma’s second novel, What Can Go Wrong, will be published by Viking/Penguin in 2015.
